Abstract
This article is composed of three essential elements. The first part addresses the curriculum of the Ministry of Public Education at the upper secondary level, analyzing and reflecting on the gap in the teaching of Art History at this educational level. The second part reveals the importance of Art History for basic education and its links with the methodological tools implemented by heritage education. Finally, the results of a project developed with fifth-semester high school students at the “Instituto Arte y Cultura Colegio México” during the Art History course are presented. As a didactic strategy, each student created an art catalog on the prehistoric period: Paleolithic, Mesolithic, Neolithic, and the Age of Metals. The main objective was the development of the educational function, interaction, reception, and dissemination of art to produce knowledge through heritage education. In addition to showing the structure of the catalog, this paper addresses the following questions: Why is the creation of an art catalog important for 17 and 18-year-olds? What content does a student-created catalog offer? What is the patrimonial value of these prehistoric artworks? Is it possible that creating the catalog attracts or alienates students from the knowledge of art?
