Abstract

This article advances an evolutionary approach to the study of art and aesthetics, situating aesthetic behavior within biological and cultural adaptive processes. Drawing on Darwinian theory and contemporary models of cultural evolution, it examines how aesthetic preferences, artistic production, and symbolic practices can be understood as outcomes of natural selection, sexual selection, and gene–culture coevolution. The paper argues that aesthetic behavior is not a mere byproduct, but an adaptive dimension of human cognition and social organization. By integrating insights from evolutionary biology, evolutionary psychology, anthropology, and philosophy of art, it maintains that artistic practices serve functions related to social cohesion, environmental signaling, and meaning-making. Overall, the evolutionary perspective provides a unifying framework that reconnects aesthetics with the natural history of the human species while preserving the complexity of cultural expression.
